How Igor Thiago Turned Development Into Market Value

Igor Thiago’s career is a strong example of how player development does not always follow the most obvious route. 

His journey has taken him from Brazil to Bulgaria, Belgium and eventually the Premier League — with each move representing a higher competitive level and a significant increase in his football profile. 

What makes the story particularly interesting is not simply where he ended up.

It is how each environment prepared him for the next one.

Brazil: Building the Foundation 

Thiago began his professional career with Cruzeiro after earlier development at Verê FC. His pathway was far from straightforward, but Cruzeiro provided the platform for his introduction to senior football.

At that stage, he was not yet an internationally recognised striker. 

The next move changed the trajectory.

Ludogorets: The European Breakthrough

In March 2022, Thiago joined Ludogorets in Bulgaria. 

The move represented an important developmental step: a new country, a faster competitive environment and European football. 

His impact was significant. 

Across 55 appearances, he scored 21 goals, while Ludogorets won domestic honours. The club later sold him to Club Brugge in what it described as a record transfer fee received by a Bulgarian club. (Ludogorets) 

This is where the development chain becomes particularly important.

Ludogorets did not simply recruit a striker. 

It helped move a player from one market level into another.

Club Brugge: Performance Creates Value 

Belgium provided the next test. 

Thiago responded with 29 goals and six assists in 55 appearances, contributing to a league title and a run to the UEFA Conference League semi-finals. (Brentford FC)

His performances attracted Brentford, who agreed a deal in February 2024 before he officially moved to England that summer.

Each step increased both the competitive demand and the player’s market relevance.

The Premier League Step 

Thiago’s first season in England was disrupted by injuries. 

But his response in 2025/26 changed the picture dramatically. 

He scored 22 Premier League goals and 25 in all competitions, earned a place in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year and became the first Brentford player to win the Premier League Player of the Month award — twice.
